What is Wildacres?

Wildacres is a Retreat & Conference Center dedicated to the betterment of human relations. The facilities are used by educational and cultural groups such as music, art, mineral & lapidary classes, and religious, interfaith, civic, and science seminars. More than 80 diverse groups participate in a typical Wildacres season. 

What does the EFMLS do at Wildacres?

The Eastern Federation of Mineralogical & Lapidary Societies holds two workshops at Wildacres each year, in the spring and the fall. 

Where is Wildacres?

At an elevation of 3,300 feet, Wildacres is situated on 1,600 acres atop Pompey's Knob, a mountain near the Blue Ridge Parkway in Little Switzerland, North Carolina. 

How is the food?

Well-prepared, abundant, served family-style, and accommodating to dietary needs. 

May children attend?

Yes, if over twelve 

What about pets?

Only service animals are permitted at Wildacres.

Do I have to sleep in a tent?

No, the comfortable hotel-style rooms have individual baths along with gracious common spaces. 

Is Wildacres Handicapped accessible?


How's the weather?

You'll be at 3400 feet in the mountains. The weather can be quite variable. Pack for layering and check the 7-day forecast for Spruce Pine, NC before you depart. 

Who are the instructors?

Classes are taught be highly experienced craftspeople. All instructors are volunteers. 

Who may attend the workshops?

Anyone may attend, but priority is given to members of clubs belonging to EFMLS. Here is a list of clubs. 

Is an EFMLS Workshop expensive?

A week at an EFMLS Wildacres Workshop includes room & board,  and lectures for only $425 tuition. The tuition does not include class fees. The individual instructors set the fee for their class. Approximately 2/3 of the cost of attending Wildacres is underwritten through the generosity of the Blumenthal Foundation.

Are there any other expenses

Depending upon the class, there may be an additional fee for supplies. These fees reflect only the instructor's direct costs. 

May my partner relax as I attend class?

Sorry, no. Wildacres requires that attendees fully participate in their group's program. However, an EFMLS Wildacres Workshop has classes that should appeal to most all folks. Come and enjoy! 

Is alcohol permitted at Wildacres?

Yes, you are most welcome to enjoy a libation with friends on the deck, in the canteen, or in your room. BYOB-- no alcohol is sold at Wildacres. 

What about that "Good Stuff" auction?

Bring mineral specimens, cabbing rough, books, tools--anything hobby-related--to be auctioned for the direct support of the EFMLS Wildacres Workshops.
