The Milpillas Mine is located in Sonora, Mexico*.  This world class underground copper mine opened in 2006 to explore a recently discovered, deeply oxidized and enriched Porphyry Copper deposit.  Evan will share his experiences at Milpillas since the mine opened in 2006.

Finely crystallized specimens of azurite and malachite pseudomorphs after azurite, began to appear on the collector market shortly after mine opened.  Soon, truly dazzling specimens of azurite, malachite and then brochantite began appearing in substantial numbers- much to the delight of collectors worldwide.  Eventually, well crystallized examples of other copper minerals, including several rare copper vanadate and arsenate species and gangue minerals were also recovered.  In the 15 years since the mine opened, impressive assemblages of collectible minerals have found their way into collectors’ hands.  The Milpillas Bonanza has elevated the mine to the status of a world-class mineral locality and the most important crystallized azurite discovery in modern times. All good things must come to an end and the mine closed in early 2021 due to low copper prices, low ore grades and the SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic.

The EFMLS extends its gratitude and appreciation to Mr. Jones (not to be confused with his famous father, Bob).  We could say that Evan is “A Chip off the Ole Bob,” but we may not need to. (terrible rock pun anyway- Chip!, really?)
